Although never achieving major chart success, Rufus Wainwright has been a creative force to be reckoned with ever since his self-titled debut in 1998. After years of critically acclaimed releases, in 2012 he unleashed a tour de force entitled Out Of The Game. Produced by Mark Ronson, from beginning to end this masterpiece delivers one amazing track after another blending different styles in what has been described as baroque pop. Wainwright takes the listener on a luscious musical journey that does not disappoint. From the opening title track through to the exquisite closing track Candles, the album was one of the best releases from last decade. Ten tracks from the LP were the centerpiece of his performance on an episode of the acclaimed American Public Television series Live from the Artists Den.
After taking a turn in musical direction by releasing two albums on the German classical label Deutsche Grammophon, Wainwright has now emerged with his long-awaited true follow-up to Out Of The Game. Entitled Unfollow the Rules, this collection of twelve tracks picks right up where Out Of The Game left off. Produced by Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Paul McCartney, Pearl Jam, Bonnie Raitt), Wainwright stated that the title came from something his daughter said to him, and which he uses to express the need to reexamine the world. Standout tracks include the title track, Damsel In Distress, and Only the People That Love. His theatrical pop stylings are back in full force and as written in The Guardian Unfollow the Rules "marks a welcome return to the opulent orchestration of Wainwright's early albums".
